It was recently reported that SanrioTown, a social networking community aimed toward young fans of Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters, was subject to a hack that caused over three million users’ to have their personal information compromised. As a leader in cyber security litigation, Keller Rohrback immediately began an investigation.

Users were alerted on December 22, 2015 that “personal information belonging to members of the consumer website SanrioTown.com was publicly accessible owing to a security vulnerability.”  Among the information compromised was email addresses, full names, nationalities, genders and password retrieval questions. The children who frequent a site like this often are not willing or able to create very secure passwords, and so are especially exposed in these kinds of attacks.

Keller Rohrback complex litigation attorney Cari Laufenberg is not satisfied with the measures taken to protect children in this case. “Consumers should be able to trust that their children’s information and safety is secure, particularly when they are using a website marketed toward children,” she said.
